An Elegant Driveway With Gaps

We had the pleasure of working alongside North Shore Carpentry on this project. Like many driveway replacements, the job began with removing the old existing surface—a mix of asphalt, concrete, and pavers—to make way for a fresh new install. The finished result is a modern concrete driveway featuring a smooth finish and clean 4-inch gaps between each panel, creating a bold architectural look with sharp contemporary lines.

The Preperation

We started by removing the old driveway to make way for the new installation. Once demolition was complete, the area was excavated to the proper depth to allow for a solid gravel base, creating the foundation for long-term durability. A rebar grid was then installed throughout the driveway to reinforce each panel and improve structural strength before moving into the next stage—carefully setting and preparing the forms for the new pour.

Preparing The Forms

To create the driveway’s signature 4-inch panel gaps, we custom-built the forms by sandwiching foam between 2x4s, producing precise 4-inch-wide separators. These form assemblies were then carefully laid out across the driveway and positioned to match the design specifications exactly, ensuring the finished layout reflected the intended modern pattern and spacing.

Pouring The Driveway

The driveway was poured in two separate stages to ensure maximum control over placement, finishing quality, and overall consistency. Dividing the project into two pours allowed us to carefully manage the concrete, maintain clean edges around the detailed form layout, and achieve the smooth, uniform finish required for this modern design.

The Second Pour

For the second pour, the completed first section was carefully protected with poly and tape to keep it clean and prevent any splatter or damage during placement. This extra attention to detail helped preserve the finish of the initial pour while allowing us to seamlessly complete the remaining panels.

Removing The Forms

Once the concrete had cured, the forms were carefully removed by first running a saw down the center of each separator. This allowed us to break the forms apart and remove them in sections, minimizing stress on the concrete and helping prevent any chipping or damage to the sharp panel edges.

Forms Are Stripped

With the forms removed and the panel layout fully revealed, the driveway was ready for its final detail—the addition of decorative rock within the panel gaps. This next stage enhances the modern design by highlighting the spacing between panels and adding contrast, texture, and visual depth to the finished driveway.

Applying A Penetrating Sealer

As a final protective step, a water-based penetrating sealer was applied to the driveway to help guard against moisture, staining, and everyday wear. This treatment soaks into the concrete rather than sitting on the surface, providing long-lasting protection while maintaining the driveway’s natural appearance.

Adding The Rock

To complete the design, decorative rock was placed within the panel gaps to accentuate the driveway’s modern layout and add texture and contrast throughout the surface. Since the rock arrived with some dust and debris, it was thoroughly washed during installation to ensure a clean, refined finished appearance.

Project Is Complete

This project involved removing the existing driveway and rebuilding it with a proper gravel base, rebar reinforcement, and a custom 4-inch panel layout. The concrete was poured in two stages, followed by careful form removal and finishing details. Decorative rock was installed in the gaps and cleaned on site, and a water-based sealer was applied for protection. The result is a clean, modern driveway with a sharp architectural finish.
