A Modern Step Renovation

This project focused on replacing aging, unsafe wooden steps with a clean, long-lasting concrete solution. The original front and back steps had begun to rot, creating a clear safety concern for the homeowner. We removed the deteriorating structures and installed new, modern concrete steps at both entrances, designed for durability and everyday use.

Each set of steps was finished with a defined nosing, giving them a sharp, contemporary look while also improving traction and edge visibility. The result is a safer, more modern entryway that not only enhances the home’s appearance but will stand up to the elements for years to come.

Stage One Demolition

The Front

The demolition phase was all about precision and care. While the existing landings were to remain intact, the deteriorating wooden steps needed to be fully removed without disturbing the surrounding structure. We carefully dismantled each section, ensuring the landings stayed clean and undamaged, while stripping everything back to create a solid, workable foundation.

The Back

By the end of this stage, we had a clean slate in place—setting the project up perfectly for the next step of forming and building the new concrete stairs.

Forming The Steps

The Front

With demolition complete, the forming stage was where everything had to come together with precision. Since the existing railings were being reused, the new stair layout needed to match the original dimensions exactly. We carefully measured and rebuilt the formwork to mirror the previous rise, run, and overall footprint, ensuring a seamless fit once the concrete was poured.

The Back

This level of accuracy was key—not just for appearance, but for functionality. By aligning the new stairs perfectly with the existing structure, we were able to preserve the railings without modification, keeping the project efficient while maintaining a clean, cohesive look.

The Pour

Once the formwork was complete, we moved into reinforcing the structure by installing a rebar grid within the steps. This added strength is key to ensuring the concrete is structurally sound and holds up over time.

With everything in place, we proceeded with the pour. After placing the concrete and working it through the forms on the first pass, the material began to tighten up, giving us the perfect window to complete our final finishing pass. This step allowed us to refine the surface and edges, leaving the stairs with a clean, consistent finish ready to cure.

After Removing the Forms

The Front

After allowing the concrete a few days to properly cure, we returned to carefully strip away the forms and begin a thorough site cleanup. With the forms removed, the new steps were fully revealed, and we took the time to go over the surface and edges in detail.
