Black Floating Concrete Steps
This project showcases a bold front entrance transformation featuring sleek black concrete floating steps paired with clean, modern walkways that tie the entire space together. Designed to make a statement while remaining highly functional, every detail was carefully planned and executed to elevate the look and feel of the home’s entry. Below, we’ll take you through our process step by step—highlighting how this striking and durable entrance came to life.
Starting from a true blank slate on this new build, we were provided with detailed plans from the builder and the opportunity to bring the entire front entrance to life from the ground up. With no demolition or excavation required, the focus was on carefully building up the area using a compacted gravel base to establish proper height, drainage, and support. This stage sets the foundation for everything to come—watch as we turn a clean set of plans into a fully realized, standout entrance.
In this stage, we brought in and carefully compacted gravel to build up the grade, creating a solid, properly elevated base to match the design. From there, we began forming the step risers, precisely shaping each one to achieve a clean, consistent layout. These risers are uniquely designed to create a floating effect in the final build, giving the steps a modern look that appears to hover above the ground.
After completing the floating steps, we moved on to forming and cribbing up a large thickened-edge upper concrete pad. This area was carefully reinforced with a detailed rebar grid to ensure long-term strength and durability, especially at the perimeter where loads are concentrated. The added reinforcement and thickened edge work together to create a solid, high-performance slab that ties the upper entrance area seamlessly into the rest of the design.
To ensure the highest level of precision and stability, this project was split into two separate pours. The first pour focused on the complex floating concrete stairs, which required extensive bracing and support to prevent any movement during placement and finishing. Once the steps were fully set and cured, we returned for the second pour—this time installing sleek black concrete walkways that connect the entrance seamlessly. The result is a cohesive, modern front entry that balances structural complexity with a clean, architectural finish.
In this stage, all formwork is carefully removed to reveal the finished concrete work and open up the space for the final details. With the structures now fully set, we clean up the site and prepare the surrounding areas for landscaping and railing installation. This step marks a big transition in the project, as the clean concrete forms give way to the finishing touches that will complete the front entrance design.
With the landscaping complete and all finishing elements in place, the project is now fully realized as a modern, high-end entrance to a brand new home. The black concrete floating steps and walkways are framed by clean, thoughtfully designed landscape features, tying everything together into a cohesive front entry. The result is a striking, functional, and a welcoming space.
